In the Upanayanam (investure of the sacred thread) ceremony, the hair of the brahmachari was separated into three portions using the quill. Also, during the seemantam ceremony of a pregnant woman, her hair used to be parted using the quill.

Fortunately, the use of the quill in Brahmanic ceremonies has been replaced by a wooden or plastic comb.
