The eagle, called Garutman (‘the winged one’) and Suparna (‘beautiful wings’), first appears as an associate of Indra and the Sun in Rig veda and is associated with Vishnu as his vehicle later in the Atharva Veda.
The Garuda Purana, named after the eagle, is a philosophical treatise discussing the passage of the afterlife and rituals for the dead.
