Perungulam Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple is also known as ‘Thirukkulanthai’ is located enroute of Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli in Thoothukudi District, Tamilnadu. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is also one of the 108 Divya Desam Temples. Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple is also called as ‘Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple’, ‘Perungulam Temple’, ‘Balika Vanam’ and ‘Sani Kshetram’. Perungulam Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple is one of the ‘Nava Tirupati temples’.

The primary deity of this temple is Lord Mayakoothar Perumal (Lord Vishnu) facing east direction and also named as Lord Srinivasa Perumal. ‘Goddess Kulanthai Valli Thaayar’ and ‘Goddess Alarmel Mangai Thaayar’ are found on the both sides of Lord Srinivasa Perumal.

In this temple Lord Garuda is considered as an Utsav (festival) deity, because it is said that Lord Vishnu went on his Garuda Vaahan to kill an Asura(demon). It is said that, here Lord Vishnu celebrated his victory dance by standing on Asura’s body, and so the temple is called as Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple.  Since Garuda was instrumental in bringing the Lord to this place, he was accorded a special status at this temple and is seen as a Utsavar (procession deity)

Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple contains a big lake and hence this temple is popularly called as ‘Perungulam’.

The festival of ‘Vaikasi Utsav’, also named by ‘9 Garuda Sevai Utsavam’ celebrated in a grand manner every year in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May). The festival idols of deities from all the Nava Tirupathi temples are brought on Garuda Vahana. Utsavar (An idol) of Nammazhvar is also brought in a palanquin to each of the 9 temples while the Paasurams (the Hymns dedicated to each of the 9 temples) are chanted respectively.
