In Hindi, Sonagiri means “mountain “  (Giri) of “Gold” ( Sona). There are several Jain temples spread over the Sonagiri Hill.  One  can find 82 pinnacled temples on the hill and 16 temples at the foot of the hill. On the hill, there is broad-mouthed cocoanut basin. It is cut from a slab of stone in the shape of a coconut. There is also another slab of stone, when beaten it produces sound like that of a metal.Hence it is called as ‘Bajani shila’. The temple no. fifty seven on hill is the main temple. The temple number 57 is the most famous  and  noted for its  archetucrural beauty .It has a beautiful spire and the principal deity is the idol of Lord Cahndra Prabhu  3.35m high. There are also two other idols of Lord Sheethalnath and Parsvanath. There is also a column of dignity (Manstambh) near the  temple which is 13.10m high. Other attractive features include a colossus of Bahubali in standing posture which is 5.48 m high and set on a platform 7.62m high. Attractive models of Sammedshikar, Girnar, Champapur and Pavapur have been constructed. The images are very pleasing to the eye.

This place has been sacred to the Jain since the time of Lord  Chandra Prabhbu. Devotees and saints came here since time immemorial   to practice self discipline and in order to attain salvation. It is reputed that 5 and a half crores of saints attained salvation here. Some of the famous saints who came here include Nang, Anang, Poornachand, Ashoksen, Srithantha and Sowarna badra. Other famous ascetics who lived and worked here were Acharya Shubh Chandra and Bhartihari. An annual festival or mela is celebrated from Phalgun Shukla to Chaitra Krishna.
