The world famous Meenakshi Amman Temple also known as Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple situated on the southern bank of the river Vaigai in the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is the goddess Parvathi , also known as Meenakshi and her consort Shiva known here as Sundareswarar.
As in most temples in Tamil nadu, the there is a sacred tank located within the precincts of the temple. It is known as Porthamarai Kulam. The temple also has a nandhavanam or garden where flowers are grown to be offered to the deity. However, due to urbanization, the drop in rainfall and the changing sensibilities of contemporary society the nandhavanams are being neglected.
