Velliangiri

The Velliangiri Mountains are a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and situated about 5 km from the foot hills or the Poondi temple and 30 km from the Coimbatore city and near Siruvani, the hill is 6000 feet high.  It is called the “Kailash of the South”. On the top of the Velliangiri Mountains, Shiva is worshipped as Swayambhu, the Moolavar is called Velliangiri Andavar and thayar – Manonmani. Kaithatti Chunai, Pambatti Chunai, Aandi Chunai are the tirthas of this temple.  It is believed that this temple is 2000-3000 old.

There is a cave the temple with the height of 6 feet where Lord Shiva graces the devotees as (Pancha) -Five Lingas. Two rocks on either side of the shrine appear as natural Dwarapalakas– the securities. The sand in the fifth hill being the sacred ash, it is called  “Thiruneer Malai” – the Hill of sacred ash.

Legend

It is strongly believed that feeding one person in Velliangiri temple is equal to feeding thousands in Kasi (Varanasi).  The hill is associated with stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharatha.  There are seven hills here.  It is said that Mother Sita performed penance on Lord Shiva at the fifth hill.  According to the Puranas, Velliangiri is the venue where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a hunter before Arjuna and fought with him as a play and granted him the Pasupatha weapon.

Dhyanalingam:

The Dhyanalingam is just 2 kms away from Poondi temple. The temple was consecrated by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a yogi and mystic. The temple is consecrated using prana prathista and is dedicated for meditation. In Sanskrit “Dhyana” “meditation” and “linga“ means “form”. Dhyanalinga is claimed by the owners of the temple to be a powerful and unique energy form created from the distilled essence of yogic sciences and the first of its kind to be completed in over 2,000 years.

Theerthakund

A subterranean tank located 35 ft (10.7 m) below holds a lingam immersed in water. Followers claim that the lingam is made of solidified and 99.8% purified mercury. The mercury is said to have been solidified at room temperature. Mercury has a freezing point of −38.83°C at atmospheric pressure, but ancient Indian alchemy claims to have techniques to do so. These methods are said to have been used by yogis to solidify the lingam at room temperature. People can take a dip in this water before they go to the Dhyanalinga temple. A semi-circular brick vault covers this tank, the inner sides of which have murals in pure natural dyes with its theme depicting a Maha Kumbha Mela scene. Nadha Aradhana and Aumkar Meditation are performed here.
