Kalpeshwar Temple an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Is situated in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Kalpeshwar temple is the fifth temple to be visited in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, comprising five Shiva temples in the Garhwal region. At this small stone temple, which is approached through a cave passage the matted tress (jata) of Lord Shiva is worshipped. Hence, Lord Shiva is also called as Jatadhar or Jateshwar.
The Kalpeshwar temple is believed to be established by the Pandavas, the heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Legend has it that the Pandavas came to the Himalayan mountains in search of god Shiva, to redeem them of the sins of killing Kauravas in the epic Kurukshetra war. God Shiva did not wanted to meet them and escaped in form of a bull in the ground and re-entered in parts in the Panch Kedar places: the hump raising in Kedarnath, the arms appearing in Tungnath, the navel and stomach surfacing in Madhyamaheshwar, the face showing up at Rudranath and the hair and the head appearing in Kalpeshwar.
Pandavas, pleased with the revelation of Lord Shiva at five places in different forms, built temples at these five places, worshipped him and attained salvation with blessings of Shiva. The temples were later discovered by Adi Sankaracharya.
Kalpeshwar houses the famous Kalpavriksha. This tree is believed to fulfil all the wishes of a person.
Kalpeshwar Temple is a beautiful stone marvel which went on much modification over the years since ancient times. The entire structure is built of granite stones obtained from the same mountains. This temple is built in the Nagara architectural style. A huge tower is built here with a porch at the top of the tower. The main sanctum sanctorum lies under this huge tower structure’s central area. In front of the temple a huge brass bell is found hanged from a stone pillar. The temple is hence considered to be of great architectural significance.
The temple celebrates Maha Shivrathri as its main festival which is witnessed by lakhs of devotees every year. On this auspicious day, many rituals are conducted throughout the day and night. Getting blessed on this day is considered to be very advantageous.
The Buddha Kedar Temple which is only partly viewed from the potato fields is on the way to the Kalpeshwar temple. One of the Sapta Badri temples known by the name Dyan Badri Temple is also on the route to the holy place.
