It refers to a group of three mountain peaks of western Kumaon with the highest Trisul I reaching 7120m.  The three peaks resemble a trident. In Hindi, the trident is the symbol of Lord Shiva, the God of destruction. The Trisul group forms the southeastern corner of the ring of peaks enclosing Nanda Devi Sanctuary, about 15 km from the southwest of Nanda Devi peak to which  it is connected by a narrow crest. It is one of the most majestic peaks in the range. The religious symbolism derives from the fact of its resemblance to the trident of lord Shiva. The entire Garhwal region is holy to the Hindus because of the presence of numerous lofty peaks rich in tradition and religious mythology.
