Chitra Chal hill

Chitra Chal hill also known as Navagraha Hill in Guwahati city, Assam, India houses the famous temple of nine planets.  In this temple are Nine  Shivalingams, representing the nine planets, each adorned with a coloured garment symbolic of each of the planets, with a Shivaligam in the centre symbolising the Sun. Worship of planets in Assam (like other parts of India) goes back to ancient times. Assam was said to have been a great centre of study of astronomy and astrology that is one of the reasons why Assam has been referred to as Pragjyotishapura or the city of eastern Astrology. According to the Kalika Purana, the city by name Pragjyotishapura (meaning, eastern city of astrology) was created by Brahma in ancient times as he wanted to build up a city equivalent to the city of Indra (Heaven).
