Dhauligiri Hill is an area marked by the immobility of the Daya River and is at a distance of 8 km from Bhubaneswar. The hills of Dhauli Giri are better known under the name of Peace Pagoda or Dhauli Shanti Stupa.
The Peace Pagoda is built on the hills of Dhauli near the riverbank of the Daya River. It is said that Dhauli is the place where the battle of Kalinga was fought. Dhauli has a number of important edicts from Ashoka and it is now an important center of Buddhism in India. Ashoka built several Stupas, Chaityas, Pillars around the town and did his best to create a peaceful society by helping others post war. The Dhauli Shanti Stupa has four massive idols of Lord Buddha in various poses with episodes of the life of Gautam Buddha carved on stone slabs.
