Pattumala

Pattumala literally means “hill draped in silk”. This beautiful region in Idukki is approximately 8 kms from Peermade and 24 kms from Thekkady. The place gets its name mainly due to the lush green tea plantations and small streams and rivulets that run through this region.

It resembles a silk cloth draped over the region when the sun shines and the lush greenery glistens. One can partake of a leisurely walk along these hills and take in the serene beauty and fresh air. This was a place where silk worms were grown by the Europeans. It is surrounded by big and small hills with evergreen tea gardens.

One of the major attractions of this region is the Velankanni Matha church situated atop a hill. This is a famous pilgrim centre, and is built entirely from granite. There is also a beautiful flower garden nearby.

The Pattumala Matha Church is a Roman Catholic Latin Rite pilgrim shrine in Kerala dedicated to “Our Lady of Good Health”. It is served by the “Congregation of the Missionary Brothers of Saint Francis of Assisi” (CMSF). The main offering of ‘Pattumala Matha’ shrine is silk pattu and candle. The spiritual atmosphere, the cool climate, the panoramic view of nature, quietness of the surroundings and uncontaminated air helps you to have a soul stirring spiritual experience.
