This hill of 1675m lies close to Namchi in the south Sikkim region, about 75km from Gangtok. It is a renowned pilgrimage centre of the Buddhists. The word Samdruptse literally means “wish fulfilling tree” in the Bhutia language. It is also reputed to be a dormant volcano.  Myths say that the Buddhist monks have been going on top of the hill and offering prayers to the volcano to keep it calm.

Samdruptse has gained prominence mainly due to a gigantic statue of Guru Padmasambhava also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru).  On the hillock at the back of the statue, Buddhist place prayer flags and build cairns in order to bring good luck on this “wish fulfilling hill”.  Guru Rinpoche is famous in Buddhist tradition as the patron saint of Sikkim. He is widely considered to be the second Buddha. He is reputed to have blessed Sikkim more than 1200 years ago. He is also reputed to have taken Buddhism to Tibet and Bhutan and other countries of the Far East during the eight century CE.

Samdruptse has been developed as a pilgrimage centre to spread the message of love, compassion and peace of the Buddha.
