Nanded city is the centre of governance of Nanded district. It is a major destination for Sikh pilgrims, as the 10th Sikh Guru (Guru Gobind Singh) made Nanded his permanent abode and passed his guruship to the Guru Granth Sahib before his death in 1708.

The city is home to the Hazur Sahib Gurudwara, the second holiest place for Sikhs, next only to the Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara (the much-revered Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab.

The tenth apostle, Guru Gobind Singh moved to Nanded in 1708 and lived here during the final years of his life. Here, he declared that he would be the last guru of Sikhism and passed on the mantle to Guru Grant Sahib (the holy book of Sikhism).

At the site where the Guru breathed his last, a Gurdwara called “Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchal Nagar Sahib” was built between 1832 and 1837, under instructions from Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

It is a two-storey building. The architectural design resembles that of the Golden Temple. The interior is artistically ornamented in the style of Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar. The walls of the inner room called Angitha Sahib have been covered with golden plates. On the first floor, recitations from Sri Guru Granth Sahib, go on day and night. The dome is polished and on the pinnacle is the kalash made of gold plated copper.

Some of the sacred relics of Guru Gobind Singh are also preserved here. These are, a golden dagger, a matchlock gun, an archer with 35 arrows, two bows, a steel shield studded with precious stones and five golden swords.

Besides Gurdwara Sachkhand Sahib, other gurdwaras at Nanded are Sangat Sahib, Shikar Ghat, Nagina Ghat and Hira Ghat. Thesew too are built in memory of visit of Sri Guru Gobind Singh to this place.
