Pragbodhi hills

The Pragbodhi Mountain is situated near Gaya district in the state of Bihar. The literal meaning of the word ‘Pragbodhi’ is ‘prior to Enlightenment and the place indicates exactly the same fact. The legend says that the Lord Buddha practised austerities at this place for six years. It is believed that he stayed in a cave on this mountain. Later, the mountain came to be known as the Pragbodhi (Prior to Enlightenment)  and is now known as Dhungeswara. There is a small temple near the cave and also some ruins of ancient stupas. From the top of the hill one can get a panoramic view of the Mahabodhi temple in the distance. It is also an ideal place for meditation.
