Sacred Groves in Bihar
Although there are several tribes among whom this tradition is present in Bihar, not much information is available about sacred groves in the State. The sacred groves in Bihar are locally known as Sarnas. 43 sacred groves have been documented in the state.
Raksel, Darha, Marang-Baru, Jaher-Buri, Chandi, Dharti, Satbahini and Jaherera are some of the deities to whom these groves are dedicated. Hatubongako or the village gods occupy the most significant place in the groves. They are regarded as the guardians of the village and their help is invoked in agricultural and other economic operations.
Bamboo and sal trees are among the most commonly found plant species in the sacred groves.
