Butta Gufa

 

Abhinava Gupta was a great and renowned thinker and philosopher of Shiva Philosophy in Kashmir who lived in the valley at the end of the 10th century and beginning of the 11th century AD. Being a versatile genius he introduced and injected a new meaning into Shiva philosophy. Besides he was a greatest interpreter of monistic Shaivism.

It is said that Abhinava Gupta lived in a cave in the village Beerwah (Bairav) of Budgam  district about 1000 years back nearly 30 miles from present Srinagar City and the people of the valley recognized him as the spiritual head of the Shiva School of thought, which was prevalent in Kashmir valley before the advent of Islam in Valley.

This cave is of religious importance for the people of valley especially for Kashmiri Pandits as Abhinava Gupta along with his disciples used to reside in this cave. Being a great Yogi he entered this cave along with his 1200 disciples and was seen never again. This cave of Saint Abhinav Gupta is locally known as Butta Gufa i.e. Cave of Kashmiri Pandits.
