Devagiri Hill Cave

Sacred Devagiri Hill at Kalyansinghpur village of Rayagada district raises upto a height of 400 feet. The specialty of the hill is that it is not narrower upwards like other hills but ends in a flat platform of rectangular plain of 400 by 100 feet having no trees or bushes. The sides being very steep the summit can be approached only from the northern side. There are seven natural steps in ascending order placed at a distance of 20 to 30 feet apart. In between the surface is rough, thus helping to climb crawling. These natural steps are yet another unique feature of the Devagiri hill.

The fourth step enshrines Mahalaxmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty. One can reach the flat surface after crossing the seventh step, the top most one. There is a heap of stones known as ‘Sukhuakhai’ and it is said that one who eats sukhua or dry fish will slip down while getting down from the top. At the top, there are perennial natural pools of water called Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Bhargavi and Indradyumna, which are rare gifts of nature, and because of the presence of water the isolated place draws crowd during religious festivals such as Sivaratri.

After passing these natural pools one can see a depression from east to west at a uniform depth of five feet, the width being ten feet leading to a cave which appears like the opening of two jaws. One can enter into the cave by crawling upto the meeting point of the jaws, where Shiva Lingam, the presiding deity is enshrined. Images of various descriptions, artistically chiseled, are to be found all around the cave exhibiting the artistic skill of the medieval times. There is one still undeciphered inscription which speaks of the antiquity of the place.

On the eve of Maha Shivaratri, an eight day long festive occurs. During all Mondays of Kartika and Shravan month this place became dynamically gathered by devotees.
