Durpin Dara is one of the two hills the other being Deolo Hill connected by a ridge on which the town of Kalimpong stands.  The hill is also known as “Dara” in the local language. The hill commands a panoramic view of the town of Kalimpong, the snow clad Himalayan ranges, the Teesta River and its valley and the Jelepla pass.  In Nepali, the word “Durbin” means “binoculars”. In fact, the Durpin hill is a point from which one can enjoy a spectacular view of the scenic splendour of the Himalayas.

A famous monastery called Zang Dhok Palri monastery stands on the hill top. The monastery was built by Dudjom Rinpoche in 1946 and was consecrated by Dalai Lama in 1976. The monastery holds in its reliquary 108 volumes of the Kangyur, as well as other holy books and scrolls that were moved out of Tibet after the Chinese invasion. The monastery is the residence of Lama Chme Rinpoche, a senior student of Dudjom Rinpoche.
