Mount Harmukh with an elevation of 5142 m is situated in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. Harmukh also means “same on all sides”. It forms a part of the mighty Himalayan range and it is located between Nallah Sindh in the south and Kishanganga Neelam River in the north, rising above Gangabal Lake in the Kashmir valley.  It is bordered by the Karakoram Range in the north and the Kashmir valley in the south. Melt waters from the glaciers form the Ganagabal Lake.

The peak is notable for its local relief as it consists of a steep pyramid and which drops sharply to the east and south with the eastern slope the steepest. The lake Uttarbanasa is believed to be the source of the Kashmir Ganga and lies at the foot of the north east glaciers of Harmukuta and the Tirthaa of Nandikeshtra and Bhuteshwara are near it. The peak is considered sacred by the Hindus as according to mythology it is the abode of Lord Shiva.
