In Religion and Mythology
Lord Kubera with the mongoose in his left hand
Mongoose is associated with Kubera, the God of wealth and the guardian deity of the northern direction in Hindu / Buddhist mythology.
Buddhist sculptures often depict Kubera holding a conch in his right and a jewel-spitting mongoose in his left hand. The mongoose is believed to be the receptacle of all riches. It also symbolises generosity and a destroyer of greed (snakes are believed to symbolise greed).
